In Colossians 2:20, 21, 22, 23 the apostle Paul warned against the folly of seeking holiness through asceticism. He connected ascetic practices with the philosophies alluded to in Col 2:8, which he designated " the rudiments of the world. In this passage, our inheritance is the prospective condition and possession the believer will receive in the future when Christ returns ( Acts 20:32; Eph. 1:14; 5:5; Col. 3:24; Heb. 9:15; 1 Pet. 1:4 ). Ephesians 1:18 says that the Christian will be an inheritance to God in eternity. The word “inheritance” implies that reward comes from grace. Servants and masters: Servants, obey your masters in all things according to the flesh, Colossians 3:22; Colossians 3:22. Servants must do the duty of the relation in which they stand, and obey their master's commands in all things which are consistent with their duty to God their heavenly Master. Verse 17. Whatsoever ye do in word or deed — Let your words be right, and your actions upright. Do all in the name of the Lord Jesus — Begin with him, and end with him; invoke his name, and pray for his direction and support, in all that ye do; and thus every work will be crowned with all requisite success. Doing every thing in the name of Colossians 3:23-24 CEV. Do your work willingly, as though you were serving the Lord himself, and not just your earthly master. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:2-3). Again, this is not a suggestion but a commandment. The meaning is, “Direct your focus, or interests, on things above. Set your attention and concentration single-mindedly on the Colossians 3:23. Colossians 3:23 NIV. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters. NIV: New International Version. Some heretics who turn believers away from faithful service have a false humility (“self-abasement”), which is only “a form of godliness” but denied its power” (2 Tim. 3:5) that is in Christ (Rom. 8:3–4). This fake godliness of legalists was connected with the worship of angels which Scripture forbids (Ex. 20:3–4; cf. Rev. 22:8–9).
